Computer Literacy Centre in Muzaffarabad
Background
There were many small scale computer training centres and internet café in Muzaffarabad city before the earthquake. Theses centres were providing some basic training in computer skills and access to internet. While in public sector AJK University was providing higher courses in computer sciences. The opportunities for computer education and internet access were limited even before the earthquake of Oct. 8, 2005 which has destroyed the educational infrastructure almost completely. This led to the situation where the need of developing computer literacy is even more. As the literacy rate in Azad Kashmir is 78% and unemployment is 25 to 50%. The empowerment of literate by training them in IT skills will improve the quality of the education they have already received and will open more job opportunities in rehabilitation phase of disaster.
KRRC's IT Project
KRRC program for promoting computer literacy and culture was initiated in 1990 by Talat Butt. Initially members of the KRRC were trained and later campaign was started to introduce a computer culture in Kashmir, Website www.krrc.org was developed and regularly updated thereafter, the News groups of the KRRC This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. A lot of record about Kashmir was produced on internet/computers comprising of hundreds of photographs, documents, articles, songs and other things.
Digital version of Kashmiri Qoum aping manzil ki talash main (Mr. GM Mir) was also developed (this is first ever computer version of book written by any Kashmiri author) Help was also extended to develop the websites of the many other organizations related to Kashmir. Important of this record will soon be available on the CD for quick reference, it is comprising of 34 important documents (starting from treaty with Tibetan/Chinese governments in 1842 to Lahore declaration signed between India and Pakistan in 1999, it also include UNO resolutions, 100 different articles, photo assay and more then 250 easy to use link to other relevant website.
This project has now developed as “Srinagar dot Com " under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Aurangzaib and is providing valuable services in shape of internet cafe and an institute of computer Sciences on the bases of sustainable development.
